Part Three:
Getting Engaged—Hook, Line and Syncher
In Part Four, we’ll find out how to use the READ Model of Elicitation. Before we do that, we need to learn how to effectively ‘engage’ a secret-keeper as this is the most important stage of the model.
We’ve already learned that people with hidden information will share that information with at least one other person; usually a friend or confidante and always a person the secret-keeper feels close to and likes. Close engagement is the fastest and most effective way to achieve this status in the mind of the secret-keeper.
There are three steps to follow to rapidly engage a person with hidden information. These are:
• Elicitation hook: A conversational technique to immediately ‘hook’ the secret-keeper into a conversation.
• Elicitation line: A technique or strategy used to influence a secret-keeper to open up (beyond the hook) and talk with you.
• Elicitation syncher: To SYNCHronise the positive feelings and close rapport from one conversation to a later conversation.
In the following sections, we’ll take a closer look at each of these engagement stages and you’ll see how easy and effective these can be. As humans are psychologically complex there is no one-size-fits-all elicitation technique. All situations are different and all secret-keepers are individuals, so in this part I’d like to provide you with a variety of psychological tools to enhance your chance of success. This way you can tailor your engagement approach depending upon your relationship with the secret-keeper, the circumstances of the meeting and the type of information you are trying to access.
If you follow the hook, line and syncher method, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can become a person’s close friend and confidante. This is not only a useful technique in an elicitation context; it can also result in very effective networking and even enhance personal relationships!
